Student Service Council started the year electing Madeleine Malzynski as President, Ian Scherer as Vice President, and Courtney Stenman as Treasurer/Secretary. Along with eleven elected members, twenty-two open members also joined.
This year we were involved in many service projects. In November, we held a food drive benefiting the Open Door in Winsted and Helping Hands Food Bank in Torrington.
In December, students helped the Christmas Bazaar Committee by stuffing 500+ bags with donated items.
In January, we collected tabs from cans to help Springfield’s Shriner’s Hospital. Tab collections still continues. Shriner’s Hospital helps so many with the proceeds from these collections. We were fortunate to receive two tabbed-filled garbage bags donated by a council member’s firefighting relative.
In March, we sponsored a green & white day and $200.00 in proceeds went to help Sister Norah, who was at SAS years ago, and is now doing mission work in Nigeria. Each class made a card and some students wrote letters to the people she helps. Sister Norah responded and was appreciative of the students’ thoughtfulness. We held another food drive benefiting United Way, stuffed Easter eggs with a candy treats for students and ended our year planting flowers at Chestnut Grove.
All in all we had a successful year fulfilling our mission of helping our school, community, and global neighbors. Thanks to all who support our student council activities.
