Dear Parents / Guardians,
We are about to begin a study of inventions and the process of in-

venting. During the next several weeks, your child will be looking for a problem to solve whose solution will be an invention. We will be holding a SAS Invention Convention on March 23, 2012. Ten per- cent of the students will be selected to advance to the Connecticut Invention Convention in Storrs on April 28, 2012.

Throughout this study, we will be learning how things work, what problems they solve, and how they could be improved. Students will be asking for information on what aspects of your daily life, jobs, or activities could be improved upon and what bugs you about certain things. Please help your child reflect on things that could be im- proved in his or her life. Ask questions about what could help him or her do a chore, play a sport, or make things easier. Allow your child to formulate his or her own ideas. When your child decides on a problem to solve, he or she will be filling out an Inventor’s Log with materials and directions for building an invention. At that time, you can help your child collect materials and assist in some tasks that may require special tools.

Without parental care and attention, many children would not suc- cessfully complete the invention process. We ask that you, as a par- ent, treat the invention activity as you would treat a sport in which your child is engaged. In sports, you make sure that they have their equipment ready, you bring them where they have to go, you cheer them on and give them an occasional hug, but you do not go on the field by their side. In invention, the problem must be the student’s own, the solution must be of their own design, and the inventor’s log should reflect these steps. However, a student might need to go to Home Depot or to a relative’s home to borrow equipment and that’s where you come in. They might need to be encouraged, seek advice, or require supervision with hand or power tools.

This should be an exciting and fun-filled program and we at SAS look forward to all the great inventions that the children will create. Please remember that this activity is intended to create problem solvers. Its purpose is not to create stress, but to stress creativity!

We are excited to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. This year’s theme, “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” focuses on three Catholic schools priorities that make us stand out from other educational institutions.

Children are taught faith—not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God.

Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential.

Service, the giving of one’s time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and
good citizenship.

Join us on Sunday, January 29, as we begin the week with a 10:30 Mass followed by an open house from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. The Open House is a perfect opportunity to stop in for some refreshments, visit with teachers, tour the building and view student artwork.

Do you know how the gift card program works? If not, check it out! Gift cards to a wide variety of retailers are made available to the school at a discounted price and we sell the cards at face value. As a result, the school realizes a profit and a portion of that profit can be credited toward your Parent Commitment. And we sell postage stamps too! Its that easy. Year round, orders are placed each Tuesday morning and delivery is made to you by the end of that same week. If you have any questions, please give me a call or send me an email.
