Father Leo took a hiatus from his 33 year pastorate in Winsted to become the sixth president of St. Bonaventure’s College and Seminary in 1877 (Now called St. Bonaventure University or SBU). He proved to be as strict disciplinarian at the college level as he was at the elementary level. SBU’s archives on their website has a transcribed copy of his handwritten 1887 Rules and Regulations. Father Leo was noted for making building improvements to the college just as he was noted for improvements in Winsted. There were changes made to SBU’s church, monastery, college buildings, and landscaping. The seminary’s archivist also states that Father Leo was repsonsible for hiring several American citizens as faculty members. During his tenure American citizens became the majority of the faculty, “taking over more and more of the duties of the foreign missionaries who had established the college.” Father Leo’s term at the college and seminary ended in 1880.
